The Vault Industry Has a Puffery Problem. Independent Custody Is the Fix

Dealer-owned storage, affiliate “best of” lists, and square-foot security claims all miss the real question: who controls your metal?

When investors buy physical gold and silver, they usually want less counterparty risk. So why hand custody back to a dealer-controlled system or a financial institution with its own agenda?

Most “best depository” lists skip that question. They focus on brand names, promotions, and facility size. I focus on custody. Who controls the metal? Who benefits from the arrangement? And what happens when the market stops behaving?

Idaho Armored Vaults exists because the precious metals storage business has a puffery problem. We do not operate under a bullion dealer. That distinction matters. When the same company sells the metal and stores the metal, the investor needs to look closer. The dealer can shape the purchase, the storage terms, and the fees. That setup may feel convenient. It is not the same thing as independence.

Our business is high-security custody. We do not push clients into preferred products. We do not hide a sales program behind vault language. We protect client assets. That is the job.

A lot of facilities sell confidence with square footage and capacity claims. I don’t care how big the building sounds if the custody model leaves questions. At Idaho Armored Vaults, we focus on segregated bailment, clear documentation, and direct accountability. We also maintain a $1.5 billion all-risk insurance policy through Lloyd’s of London.

Your metals should not feed someone else’s balance sheet, inventory system, or marketing funnel. They should remain separated, documented, and protected under a custody model built around the client. That is also why independent facilities often get left off affiliate-driven review sites. Those sites reward paid referrals, dealer promotions, and “free gold” offers that often come with a cost somewhere else.

We built Idaho Armored Vaults for investors who want custody without the sales trap. Physical metals already require discipline. Storage should not undo that discipline.

The Brief:

  • Dealer Affiliation: Idaho Armored Vaults is not owned by a bullion dealer, which removes a major conflict from the custody relationship.
  • Independent Custody: We are not here to sell you a storage program wrapped around a metals sale. We are here to protect the assets you already made the decision to own.
  • Closed-Loop Risk: When the dealer, storage provider, and promotional engine all work together, investors need to ask who really benefits.
  • Affiliate Reviews: Many online “best vault” lists are not neutral. They often reward the companies paying referral commissions.
  • “Free Gold” Promotions: Those offers usually get funded somewhere, and investors should ask whether the markup is hiding inside the metal price.
  • Segregated Bailment: Your metals should remain your metals. They should not get blurred into a pooled structure or tied to another company’s balance sheet.
  • Insurance Matters: Idaho Armored Vaults protects client assets with a $1.5 billion all-risk insurance policy through Lloyd’s of London.
  • Transparency: A real depository should make the custody structure clear instead of burying the investor in marketing language.

Gold is supposed to remove risk, not move it into someone else’s sales funnel. Independent custody keeps the focus where it belongs: on protecting the metals you already own.
